February’s CAN Zone is all about nature! We’ve got an inspiring mix of people and projects — from planters to seeds, swifts to bees, artists to photographers, litter-picking to rewilding, and so much more to discover.

  • Bearsted CAN

    Bearsted CAN are active on a range of projects in the village, many of which focus on wildlife-friendly gardening and improving the biodiversity of local green spaces. The team will be on hand to share their experience.
  • Big Day Out

    Maidstone’s celebration of nature, last year 30 groups took part and more than 10,000 residents joined activities across the borough. Cllr Richard Conyard will be able to tell you about the plans for 2026 and and discuss with any new groups who would like to be involved.
  • Cas Holmes

    Cas Holmes will be sharing her improvisational approach to working in sketchbooks as a means to record the local natural world and landscape. She will have examples of handmade and adapted sketchbooks, Feel free to come along ask questions and join in.

  • Communigrow

    Talk to the team delivering sustainable food education charity located in East Malling, Kent, at the heart of the ‘Garden of England’.
  • Community Seed Swap

    A friendly space to share and swap seeds, plants and seedlings. Bring some to swap if you can – or just come along to connect, learn, take some seeds home and get inspired for the growing season. Everyone is welcome!

  • Garden furniture & planters

    Products are hand crafted using traditional joinery methods and joints and reclaimed timber often used as seen fit.

    All timber is both factory treated if possible and certainly given a protective treatment by myself as part of the service.
  • High Weald Swifts

    A charity promoting the conservation of swifts in Maidstone, Tonbridge and the High Weald.
  • Kent and Medway Resilience Forum

    Learn about the partnership of organisations and agencies who work together to improve the resilience of Kent and Medway to ensure a coordinated response to emergencies that could have a significant impact on our communities.
  • Maidstone CAN

    The team have adopted Maidstone West Station and are enhancing the station environment with biodiverse planting and planters.
  • Maidstone Litter Picking

    Meeting every month the Maidstone CAN litter picking team concentrate on the area around Lockmeadow.

    Learn about what Maidstone Borough Council is doing to improve biodiversity and respond to climate change in the borough.
  • Richard Wingett

    As an ex-professional photographer, Richard spends a lot of time photographing wildlife in the local area and along the Len Valley. This will be a display of A3 prints of his work.

  • Save Oaken Wood

    Our community fight to save the 50 hectares of ancient woodland at Oaken Woods, Barming, from the proposed expansion of Hermitage Quarry.

    “The loss of ancient woodland from this scheme could be greater than the losses from HS2 and the Lower Thames Crossing combined.” Woodland Trust.

    The Scenic Green Trail is a long-distance walking route around the Borough of Maidstone, created by local resident Phil Riches. It follows public footpaths and short road sections to connect nature reserves, green spaces, and historic villages. The trail showcases diverse landscapes including woodlands, meadows, orchards, rivers, and lakes, as well as charming villages with rich architecture.
