Lockmeadow Litter Picking

Our litter picking group meets monthly, usually on a Sunday morning, outside the Market Hall at Lockmeadow. We focus on the Lockmeadow area and the riverside, helping to keep our local environment clean and welcoming.

We’re a friendly group and always happy to welcome newcomers. For safety, we always litter pick in pairs or small groups — never alone. Children are welcome, but must be supervised by their adults at all times.

We provide litter bags and equipment, including gloves, but please wear suitable footwear and clothing for outdoor work. We also separate recyclables from general waste using bags supplied by Maidstone Council — green for general rubbish and clear for recyclables. These can be left by any public litter bin for collection.

Why Litter Pick?

Litter is unsightly and can spoil the enjoyment of our town and natural spaces. But it’s more than just an eyesore — it’s harmful to wildlife and the environment.

  • Wildlife can get trapped or entangled in plastic bags, nets, and fishing line.
  • Animals often mistake litter for food, which can lead to starvation or poisoning.
  • Litter contaminates habitats, releasing toxic chemicals that can enter the food chain.

Many of the items we collect — such as plastic bottles and cans — can be recycled. That’s why we separate recyclables from general waste so they can be properly processed.

More Than a Clean-Up

Litter picking is also a great way to meet people, chat, and connect with others who care about the environment. It feels rewarding to leave a place cleaner and safer for wildlife — and the community often shows their appreciation.

Be the Change

In just a few hours, we can make a real difference in the place where we live. Taking action together, even in small ways, helps build a collective force for good — especially when issues like climate change can feel overwhelming.
